Washington farmers and ranchers have been following the rules and making financial decisions based on a legal framework that has been in place for over 60 years. Our community understands those rules are changing and we are all committed to adjusting our approach for the benefit of our workforce moving forward. But applying a retroactive back pay standard when farmers and ranchers had no reason to expect or plan for the financial impacts would be devastating to the families, workers, and communities that depend on this industry, especially as many of them are struggling to stay afloat under the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
